Meet John D. Carter, M.D.

John D. Carter, MD

Dr. Carter is a nationally renowned rheumatologist who previously worked as a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine.  He started his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at USF in 2001 and quickly rose through the ranks becoming the Chief of Rheumatology in 2007 and full professor in 2014. He left USF and opened his private practice, Recovery Rheum LLC, in September of 2024.

During his tenure at USF, Dr. Carter published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts.  He authored chapters on Psoriatic Arthritis, Reactive Arthritis and Undifferentiated Spondyloarthritis in Harrison’s Textbook of Internal Medicine, Kelley’s Textbook of Rheumatology and Fitzpatrick’s Textbook of Dermatology.  He has served as the principal investigator on over 75 clinical trials assessing novel therapies for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Gout and several other types of rheumatologic diseases.  He has been awarded a grant from the NIH to study a novel treatment for Reactive Arthritis.
